Extension of Stay or Early Departure

The length of authorized stay for individuals in F-1 and J-1 status is indicated on the I-94 as D/S (duration of status), and refers to the end date in item #5 on the I-20 Form and item #3 on the DS-2019 Form. Those who would like to request additional time to complete their studies or research should see their IS Advisor at least 30 days prior to the expiration of their authorized period of stay.

The length of authorized stay for H-1B, O-1, and TN workers is indicated by a specific date on the I-94 card. To initiate an extension, the employee and their host department should complete the appropriate request form and submit it to OIP with the supporting documentation listed on the request form. Extensions should be initiated early as processing may take 4-6 months.

Students and scholars who will complete their academic program prior to the expiration date on the I-20 or DS-2019 Forms should contact their IS Advisor in order to shorten the program end date on the immigration document.  DHS regulations require students and scholars to report a departure date and reason to OIP if leaving earlier than the expiration date on the I-20 or DS-2019 Form.
